4 Fabulous Chateaux – June 2

We begin our tour of the great chateaux of Bordeaux with four fabulous ones:

Chateau Haut-Marbuzet, the brainchild of one man, Msr. Herve Duboscq, who acquired the property in the 1930’s, starting with less than 5 acres.  Now one of the most appreciated chateaux in Bordeaux.

Chateau Sociando-Mallet is a high-quality vineyard with an excellent reputation, superior tasting facilities, and a gorgeous view of the Gironde.  The neglected vineyard was purchased by a wealthy wine negociant in the 1960’s purely for the view.  When he began experimenting with modern winemaking methods, he found that the terrior yielded fabulous wines!

Chateau Cos d’Estournel dates from 1810.  The pagoda architecture is part of a brilliant 19th-century marketing campaign:  Some of the wine from the Cos d’Estournel was ordered by a wealthy Englishman who had it shipped to India, and then back to England.  When he tasted it in England, it was found that the wine had improved with the journey.  Therefore, the estate marketed its wine as the “oriental” bordeaux, which was a great success in the time of the Second Empire, which was obsessed with all things exotic and oriental.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild  What can one say about the most famous vineyard in all the world?  Still the world standard after almost 300 years!

This part of the Right Bank of Bordeaux is reminiscent of Sonoma.
