Cliveden has a long and colorful history, dating back as far as 1666, when the Duke of Buckingham built the beginnings of the present house.  After two fires and much addition and alteration through the centuries, the present house was remodeled in 1893 by the fabulously wealthy Lord Astor.  The mistress of the house was the famous Lady Nancy Astor, whose guests included the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Bertrand Russel, Lawrence of Arabia, Rudyard Kipling, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Joseph Kennedy and Mahatma Ghandi.
